Maintaining skin integrity is one of the most critical aspects of care for individuals living with incontinence. When the skin is repeatedly exposed to urine, faeces, sweat, or wound exudate, it becomes vulnerable to a condition known as Moisture-Associated Dermatitis (MAD). When this skin damage is specifically caused by incontinence, it is referred to as Incontinence-Associated Dermatitis (IAD).

Unlike pressure injuries, which result from prolonged pressure on the skin, IAD is caused by the combined effects of moisture, chemical irritation, and friction. Without appropriate management, IAD can lead to skin breakdown, discomfort, pain, infection, and a significant reduction in quality of life. Early identification and interventions are essential to prevent complications and maintain healthy skin.

We provide guidance and support to participants, families, carers, and support workers to promote skin health, prevent skin breakdown, and minimise the risk of IAD. Our evidence-based approach focuses on prevention, early recognition, and effective management strategies tailored to individual needs.

Our Services Include:

  • Assessment and monitoring of skin condition and skin integrity

  • Individualised skin care and prevention plans

  • Education on IAD prevention, early identification, and management

  • Guidance on appropriate cleansing and moisturising products

  • Recommendations for barrier creams and skin protection products

  • Moisture management strategies to reduce skin exposure to irritants

  • Continence management support to minimise skin damage

  • Training and education for carers and support workers to ensure safe and consistent care practices

All education and support are tailored to the individual’s needs and aligned with their continence and care management plans.

Our Commitment

Incontinence-Associated Dermatitis is a painful but largely preventable complication of moisture exposure. Through comprehensive assessment, gentle cleansing practices, effective barrier protection, moisture management, and ongoing education, we help protect skin health and reduce the risk of further complications.

Healthy skin is the body’s first line of defence against infection and injury. Our goal is to support participants in maintaining comfort, dignity, independence, and quality of life through proactive and effective skin care management.
